Applying for an Award

When do I apply for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship?


For Initial Eligibility the student will:

  • Submit a fully completed, error free Initial Student Florida Financial Aid Application during the last year in high school prior to graduation. The application gives the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) permission to evaluate the student’s high school transcript and standardized test scores for eligibility for a Bright Futures Scholarship and other state scholarships and grants.
  • If you do not apply during your last year in high school, you will forfeit all future eligibility for a Bright Futures Scholarship.

Student Award Renewal

  • A student who receives funding during the current academic year (fall through spring) is automatically evaluated for renewal at the end of the spring term. Renewal institutional cumulative grade point average (GPA) and earned hours requirements are outlined in the table below.
  • You may contact the financial aid team if you are not meeting the renewal requirements to explore the appeal process.
  • The postsecondary institution where a student is enrolled as degree- or certificate-seeking is the home postsecondary institution. That postsecondary institution determines the courses to be included in each student’s renewal postsecondary institutional cumulative GPA.
  • A student may request that a financial aid officer at the home postsecondary institution use high school dual enrollment courses, if these courses are to the student's advantage, when calculating the renewal postsecondary institutional cumulative GPA.

 

First Year Student Scholarships

Did you just graduate high school and are entering college for the first time? These scholarships may be for you. Students can only receive 1 First Year Student Scholarship.

  • American Dream
    An MDC award that covers the in-state portion of tuition for two years of courses for all Miami Dade high school graduates who qualify.
  • Fast Track Sharks
    Get an early start to your college education by enrolling in the summer term following high school graduation. You can earn up to 6 credits at no cost!
  • Future Ready
    Miami Dade College’s Future Ready Miami-Dade Scholarship ensures all Miami-Dade County residents can complete an associate degree at Miami Dade College at zero cost.
  • The Honors College
    This scholarship covers all in-state tuition, fees and books and is available to high-achieving students who are accepted into the Honors College. Recipients have the flexibility to use other scholarships for living expenses and supplies.
  • MDC Presidential Scholars
    This program offers customized services and opportunities. The scholarship covers tuition and fees for two years for courses for Miami Dade graduates who qualify. Recipients will also receive a $500.00 stipend during the fall and spring terms and $250.00 during the summer term.
  • Rising Scholars Program
    Provides free tuition for up to two years, plus academic and co-curricular experiences to equip students with the knowledge, resources, and skills for success.

    Awarded to students who are graduating with an A.A. and planning on transferring to a four-year university.

    Are you currently enrolled in a workforce program? Do you currently reside in the state of Florida? If so, you may be eligible for Open Door. We will cover your tuition balance, exams, books, uniforms, and more. Funds will be applied after all other scholarships, financial aid, and grants funds have been applied.
  • Florida First Responder Scholarship Program
    The Florida First Responder Scholarship Program is created to assist in the recruitment of law enforcement officers, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, and firefighters within the state by providing financial assistance to trainees who enroll in an approved training program.
